Primary Eye Care
Primary eye care is a physical for your eyes. We test your vision power and it’s not perfect, it’s our job to figure out why.
We determine whether your vision problems are to due refractive issues (fixed by glasses or contacts) or more complex issues. We also test binocularity, which is how well your eyes work together as a team.
We also do comprehensive testing for the following problems:
- Cataracts
- Glaucoma
- Macular degeneration
- Ocular effects of diabetes, hypertension, and other medical conditions.
Dilated pupil examinations can be done on the same day as the initial visit or be scheduled at a later date.
Contact Lens Fitting
Most patients are suitable candidates for contact lenses. The type of contact lenses we prescribe depends on your individual situation.
Options include:
- Daily use or monthly lenses
- Soft or rigid glass permeable lenses
- Multifocal lenses to limit the need for reading glasses
- scleral lenses for patients with corneal problems, such as keratoconus or pellucid marginal degeneration
- Colored contact lenses
We provide a trial pair at the time of fitting for most patients. For patients with more unusual prescriptions, we will need to order a trial pair (which can take from 2 days to 2 weeks). We also sell contact lenses at our office and can provide an emergency pair for patients.
Complimentary cleaning and storage kits are included with the fitting process.
Refractive Surgery Co-Management
Evaluation and follow-up for patients interested in LASIK or PRK laser eye surgery.
Screening Process
We first determine if refractive surgery is right for you. We evaluate how dry your eyes are and how strong your prescription is. We also make sure there are no diseases (cataracts, corneal dystrophy, etc.) that can prevent a successful outcome.
Patient Education
We will explain what refractive surgery can and can’t do. Patients over 40 might still need reading glasses unless they choose monovision: a technique where one eye is corrected for distance and the other for reading.
Pre-Op Exam
We take careful measurements of your eyes for the surgeon. Poughkeepsie Optometry is affiliated with the renowned eye surgeon, Dr. Steven Stetson, who has performed over 40,000 refractive surgeries.
Post-Op Exams
We will have you visit our office 4-8 times after the surgery to make sure the healing process is proceeding without complications.
